Our firm has extensive experience helping individuals seek justice for violation of their constitutional rights and freedoms. Our record includes a number of significant verdicts and settlements in challenging and high-profile civil rights cases against government bodies and police officers.
We handle a variety of civil rights matters, including police shootings and other cases involving excessive force, false arrest, conspiracy, malicious prosecution, and due process claims. We have helped individuals recover substantial damages after they have been wrongly imprisoned or suffered injuries resulting from unlawful jail and deplorable prison conditions. We have brought to light and recovered damages in cases where people were wrongfully jailed for serious offenses due to false testimony provided by police officers and evidence fabrication.
We have extensive experience handling all phases of criminal litigation and investigations from inception through appeal and post-conviction in state and federal court. We have successfully tried hundreds of cases to both bench and jury for offenses ranging from misdemeanors and traffic offenses such as DUIs up to and including multiple-victim and multiple-offender homicides. We’ve handled a number of non-violent or white-collar crime cases involving allegations of fraud, dishonesty, and theft by employees. We are also adept at litigating a wide range of evidentiary and dispositive motions that require dismissal of a case prior to trial.
Our experience extends to post-trial matters as well. We’ve worked extensively on all types of post-trial matters, including motions for new trial, post-conviction petitions, 2-1401 petitions, and clemency petitions. We’ve drafted appellate briefs and motions in over 100 criminal cases and have presented oral argument before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the Illinois Appellate Court on numerous occasions. We are willing to take on such matters from other attorneys in order to achieve justice and freedom for our clients.
Although we make our living as trial attorneys, we will always consider all available options short of trial. We are skilled at plea negotiations and can negotiate for a reduced charge or sentence when that is in the client’s best interest. Our extensive experience overseeing criminal investigations also allows us to advise clients on the most appropriate course of action. These skills, including conducting witness interviews, taking witness statements, and collecting and analyzing documentary and forensic evidence also prove invaluable to companies and organizations that are conducting internal inquiries.
We help accident victims and their families obtain compensation for their injuries. We have handled a variety of traditional personal injury cases, including motor vehicle accidents, “slip and falls” (premises liability), and assault and batteries. Our firm takes a proactive approach by investigating cases thoroughly and filing claims in a quick and efficient manner, and dealing with insurance companies to make sure our clients receive everything to which they are entitled. Our skill and experience at trial has helped us obtain substantial recoveries. Recently, we were able to obtain a verdict of over $2.5 million for the mother of a victim in a premises liability case in the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Our knowledge of complex commercial litigation coupled with our experience actually trying cases make us uniquely qualified to represent businesses and individuals in their civil matters. We are regularly on trial, and understand the nuances of practicing in federal and state court. As a result, we can effectively and efficiently see our clients through all aspects of civil litigation, from pre-suit investigation through trial. We’ve brought and defended contract, tort, and statutory causes of action to resolve commercial disputes in a number of areas, including employment, insurance, environmental, and real estate.
In addition to our trial work, our firm maintains a civil and criminal appellate practice. We’ve successfully argued on numerous occasions before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the Illinois Appellate Court. Recently, we were successful before the Seventh Circuit in overturning a lower court decision barring all recovery by a family of a now deceased detainee who received substandard medical care while in jail. As a result of the Seventh Circuit’s reversal, a favorable settlement was reached.
